At Washington Pianos we occasionally encounter instruments that have lived a full musical life before arriving in our showroom. These pianos often carry a voice shaped not only by craftsmanship, but by decades of music.
This 1936 Steinway Model L grand piano, built by Steinway & Sons, is one such instrument.
The piano was originally owned by the aunt of the family from whom we acquired it. For many years it served as a well loved household instrument, played regularly and cared for with affection. Pianos that remain in musical use for long periods often develop a distinctive tonal personality, and this instrument beautifully reflects that tradition.
Musical Character
The Model L is known for its slightly larger scale and broader tonal range compared with smaller grand pianos. This particular instrument produces a warm and expressive sound with a fuller bass and greater depth than many smaller grands.
Players often notice the rich bass register and the smooth transition through the middle of the piano. The action is light and responsive, allowing for expressive control and musical nuance.
Sam often remarks that this piano developed a particularly expressive voice through years of musical use.
Preparation and Care
When the instrument first arrived, it was evaluated by a technician associated with the Piano Technicians Guild. Additional regulation and preparation were later performed by Sam to refine the action and bring the instrument to the level of responsiveness expected in the Washington Pianos showroom.
Work performed includes:
• careful action regulation
• hammer reshaping and voicing
• replacement of worn bass strings to restore tonal clarity
The result is an instrument that now plays evenly across the keyboard with a smooth, responsive touch.
Preserving Original Character
The piano retains its original ivory keytops, which show gentle wear in the middle section from years of playing. Rather than replacing them, we chose to preserve these surfaces, as many musicians appreciate both the tactile feel of ivory and the authenticity it provides.
The cabinet has been carefully restored in classic satin ebony, giving the instrument a refined appearance while respecting its historic character.
Inside the piano, the traditional gold Steinway plate remains in excellent condition, beautifully framing the strings and soundboard.
One particularly charming detail is a signature from Henry Steinway, a small historical connection that reflects the legacy of the Steinway family and their role in shaping the modern grand piano.
Continuing the Musical Story
Rather than undergoing a full rebuild, this instrument has been thoughtfully prepared to preserve its natural voice while ensuring reliable musical performance.
Today, this 1936 Steinway Model L stands ready to continue its musical life in a new home, carrying forward the warmth, character, and history that make vintage Steinway grands so special.
